A widening scandal over illegally sold, and improperly stored vaccines in China has sparked anger and drawn criticism from the government over glaring loopholes in the regulation of the world's second-largest medicine market. The illegal vaccine ring involved hundreds of people, and affected 24 provinces and cities, local media said. Officials confirmed Thursday that the person at the center of the scandal had been sentenced for similar crimes but was allowed to re-offend after being given a suspended sentence.

Food Safety


The safety of raw manure under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) final rule on produce safety is being questioned by the FDA.


A new study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine concludes that PulseNet, a 20-year-old partnership between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local health agencies, prevents more than 275,000 cases of foodborne illness each year.

Pharmacy Safety + Zika Virus

A recent study in found fifty U.S. cities where the Zika-carrying mosquito would be able to survive in the upcoming summer months. Nine of those cities, home to an estimated 14 million people, could have a “high abundance” of the virus-carrying mosquitoes by July, the study says, and the mosquito could be a problem as far north as New York.


Though mosquitoes aren't carrying or spreading the disease here, 258 people, including 18 pregnant women, have been diagnosed with Zika virus in the United States since the beginning of this year, according to the CDC.
